INFLAMATION—INFECTION & THE ORAL SYSTEMIC CONNECTION

Inflammation plays a major role in atherothrombosis, and measurement of inflammatory markers such as HSCRP may provide a novel method for detecting individuals at high risk of plaque rupture. Several large-scale prospective studies demonstrate that HSCRP is a strong independent predictor of future myocardial infarction and stroke among apparently healthy men and women.

The Oral Systemic Connection is the phenomenon created by the fact that the most recent and com-pelling research demonstrates a clear, causal con-nection between periodontal disease and heart at-tack, stroke, pre-mature birth (28%), diabetes(7.5 in-crease in mortality) and other very serious health problems. Additionally, proper treatment of periodon-tal disease has been shown to reduce these risk fac-tors.

Periodontitis patients have significantly higher blood levels of C-Reactive Protein which is predictive of heart disease, and as a predictor for heart disease, is superior to and independent of cholesterol, and has been identified as a cause of blood clots.

Treating periodontal disease is the most effective, safest, way of lowering important factors –CRP- in sys-temic disease and it will be standard of care to refer patients for a periodontal evaluation. In fact Doctors may be at risk for mal-practice suits if they don’t.

DENTAL MEDICINE

The story of medical to dental referrals has continued to develop positively since the
surgeon general’s report of May 2000:

May 2000- In her US Department of Health and Human Services report “Oral Health in
America”: A Report of the Surgeon General, Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and
Human Services announced :

“The terms oral health and general health should not be interpreted as separate entities. Oral health is integral to general health; this report provides important reminders that oral health means more than healthy teeth and that you cannot be healthy without oral health… Recently, research findings have pointed to possible associations between chronic oral infections and diabetes, heart and lung diseases, stroke, and low-birth-weight, premature births.

Virtually over 100 research results point to the facts that periodontal disease can increase the risk of systemic disease such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Be informed to avoid mal-practice suits!
